What are esports?

Esports turns online gaming into a spectator sport. It mimics the experience of watching a professional sporting event, except instead of watching a physical event, spectators watch video gamers compete against each other in competitive video games.

Is Esports a real sport?

This has been a topic that has been argued more and more lately and the answer is that yes, esports is a real sport. Although it's not athletically based as traditional sports are, studies have shown that there is a level of physical and mental fortitude and dexterity required to compete at a professional level and it has reached a mainstream level of adoption and acceptance among the younger generation. Not so long ago Poker and Chess for example were admitted into the world of sports as a real sport and many now agree that video games require an even higher level of physical ability further justifying it's labeling as a real sport.

What is the #1 Esports?

Similar to traditional sports which are categorized into specific genres such as Baseball, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Swimming, etc. Esports are also categorized by specific genres such as Massive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) which include DOTA 2 and League of Legends to name a few or Battle Royal which include PUBG, Call of Duty Warzone and APEX Legends. The genres are consistent but they can also evolve and new genres are being created every day. However, unlike traditional sports, each new season of a specific game title brings new changes to the game that increase the complexity or meta of the game which created new challenges and strategies for winning. Therefore, what is number one changes with the season across all genres. A new meta change in League of Legends might bring on more players for a period of time but it might change to another genre and title as they introduce new metas that bring other players back to it for another period of time.

Is esports a good career?

Top esports professionals can make upwards of $7 million dollars a year. Many of the highest paid esports pro come from DOTA 2 and this is mostly because DOTA 2 has among the highest prize payouts available. This is on top of their base salary which can be as high as $1 million a year. The greatest challenge in esports as it is in traditional sports is age. As competitors age, there is both the risk of injury and declining physical abilities that limit their abilities and opportunities over time. However, unlike traditional sports where an injury or retirement often means the end of their careers, esports professionals often transition over to content creation such as streaming which has often proven to be even more lucrative than competitive esports.
